Elaina (イレイナ, Ireina) is the main protagonist of the Wandering Witch series. She is a witch with the witch name of The Ashen Witch.
Appearance[]
Elaina has ashen hair, the source of her witch name. She has been often described as pretty, and cute. Minus her hairstyle, Elaina is shockingly similar to her mother.
Personality[]
Prior to the main story, she was a sheltered child who was greatly proficient in magic, innocent, and "not knowing what failure is." This personality was changed after her lessons, and she eventually became a more kind and understanding person at the start of the main story, albeit somewhat conceited with a very high opinion of herself.
She is not above swindling; having faked fortuneteller magic and setup her predictions to get money when her funds run low.
Elaina is well-read, often recalling several storybooks she read in her childhood whenever a dilemma pops up, which seems to be almost everywhere she goes; at the end of each of her adventures, she will reflect either enlightened or grimly on the subtle secret messages from the stories.
In battle, Elaina usually defensive than attacking or doing anything offensive to her opponent(s), she analyze anything around her and her opponent(s), then making strategy how to finds way to defeats or at least makes them cornered, like when she was fighting Elimia at Holy City of Esto for example.
Elaina sometimes could be aggressive when she bothered or feels offended, like when Elaina's bread falls to the ground and became dirty because of the thud caused by golem that was brought by Linaria and Arte from the future. Or when she getting called flat-chest by a young thief, she feels so offended that something goes through her mind like want to hurt the young thief.

- The author Jougi Shiraishi originally intended to give Elaina the name "Mileina Celesteria" (ミレイナ・セレステリア Mireina Seresuteria). However, the author later changed her full name to "Elaina" instead, so that her name was easy to find on search engines and keep consistent with the overall setting that the characters in Wandering Witch series doesn't have last name.
- Although the name "Celesteria" was later used as the name of the country Fran taught her students at school.
- Her favorite food is bread.
- A fun fact about Elaina's costume[1] is that her hat and cape are enchanted to be lightweight and durable, perfect for her frequent travels across various terrains and climates.
- She was allergic to cats, until in the eighth volume, after Elaina met with Matrishka and the allergic purified by Matrishka blood.
- Elaina's birthday is October 17th.
- Elaina's name is supposed to be a pun on i (1), re (0), i (1), and na (7) in Japanese, reflecting her birthday is in October 17th[2].
- Coincidentally, October 17th is also Japan's Saving Day, although this wasn't intended at first.
- Despite the fact that several characters have ship tease with Elaina or are outright in love with her, the author himself stated that he had no intention of writing a romantic subplot or introducing love interest for her, both due to the lack of desire and the possible complications of the narration on behalf of the girl in love[3].
- Her "Three Size Measurements" is stated by the author 2 times (self-reported, possibly fake):
